Logline

An ancient Queen leaves a treasure near a temple in present day Vietnam. Jack Largent is a photographer in Vietnam who is stationed near the temple and hears a rumor of a treasure buried nearby. Besides the modern story, the story also follows the tale of the ancient Queen and her people called Champas, who are compulsively devoted to their Queen. Jack Largent becomes an advertising Photographer in Chicago. He meets Catherine Marsh a television investigative reporter who is doing a story on an Asian despot named Colonel Minh. Her assistant and producer is a Vietnamese refugee named Mai Sambath. Jack falls in love with Mai, and Catherine falls in love with Jack's assistant, Kelly. Through their investigations into Colonel Minh they believe he stole millions from the South Vietnamese at the time that Vietnam fell to the North. As the investigation ensues Mai learns she is the heir to the Champa throne and is their Queen who has been lost for centuries. She also discovers that Colonel Minh is responsible for killing her parents and she swears revenge. She does not tell anyone of her discoveries as they go to Vietnam as a part of their investigation. Mai discovers the lost treasure of the Champas and is a hero in Vietnam. While this is going on, Colonel Minh is planning to kidnap Mai because he wants to foment a rebellion and take over Southeast Asia and he believes the millions of indigenous Champa faithful will follow Mai once she is revealed as the lost Queen. He plans to kidnap Mai and bring her to the traditional paradise valley that is the ancient home of the Champa people. Mai allows herself to be kidnapped because she wants to kill Colonel Minh and take revenge for her parents. Jack tries to rescue Mai and is taken prisoner. Mai is drugged and hypnotized to become the lost Queen of the Champas under Colonel Minh's control. Her people rally to her and Colonel Minh's plans move forward. But Mai is helped to recover from the drugs by an assistant Su Ling who is also one of the Champa faithful. Mai pretends to be under Colonel Minh's influence while she plots an escape and rescue of Jack. She kills Colonel Minh and during a Vietnamese attack on his valley stronghold she escapes with Jack back to the United States. Mai discovers that she has a spiritual connection to her ancestor queens that is revealed to her when the ancient Queen Dau Te Po speaks to her within her mind while she is drugged. She goes back to Vietnam where she returns to the cave-treasure site and retrieves a special ring from one of the treasure chests. When she puts on the ring she is joined in mind and body by the ancient Queen. She marries Jack but is unfulfilled while separated from her people. Jack and Catherine have been working behind the scenes to restore the Paradise valley that is the home of her people and prepare it for Mai's return. In the end as as a surprise Jack tells Mai about what they have done, and she and Jack are happy as they prepare for her return as Queen of the Champa people.
