Development Pitch
Emilia is a shy teenager who faces a breaking point and stands up to school bullies by redirecting their energy. She uses the same tactic to defeat the antagonist, a corporate conglomerate secretly trying to take over the village. Elements of scenic fantasy, dreamscape, transformational magic, and flash-backs in time make this story well-suited to animation. Themes embraced include personal empowerment, embracing the feminine, oppression, bullies, coming of age, respect for the past, age and youth in collaboration, and reverence for nature. In a divisive world, this message of hope offers understanding of how to navigate and regard what we don’t understand. The story accepts dreams as a teaching element in life, providing the ultimate motivating force to overcome the antagonist that has bullied the village for decades. Anzi mentors Emilia in the old ways and together they re-discover their dramatic and secretive history. There are complicated family relationships and history, a mystical, enigmatic grandfather figure who contrasts with impetuous and passionate youth, a teenage crush, a father’s desire to succeed, a plot to destroy the community’s way of life for the sake of profit, and the path to stepping into one’s power with the guidance of a mentor and a recurring dream. This middle grade reader contains themes and adventures meaty enough to be enjoyed by the whole family. At the end of the movie, you will know that you too, can Be the Bear!
