Synopsis
In the sense that a shaman is a mystical healer, Dr. Michael S. Fenster relates ancient rituals to preparation and consumption of food in our modern world. He aims to adjust the relationship between “health and wellness and disability and disease.”
Food is nourishment for our bodies, but it is also used in a healing sense. As our social interactions move around food, the “food shaman” brings in the spiritual and healing aspect of human eating rituals. Food is part of the courtship process of humans. The pleasure derived from food and sex are experienced through the same portions of the brain, inexorably combing the two.
The standard American diet is rich in processed foods and does not satisfy the needs of body, mind and soul. It promotes disabling diseases such as cardiovascular disease, obesity and Diabetes. The Western lifestyle is so busy and hectic that convenience comes into play when making food choices, hence the sacrifice of quality in the foods consumed. To make up the difference, supplements that are often not as advertised come into play.
The modern Western diet affects the bacteria in the gut of consumers. Paired with genetic predisposition, overall health cannot be achieved without a healthy gut. Eating certain foods can promote gut health and prevent or reverse disease process. Choosing healthy food can be a daunting undertaking. The source of food becomes important. Three questions must be applied each time a choice is made: “How was it Bred?”; “What was it Fed?”; and “Where was it Led?”. The first question addresses the origin of the food, the second the way in which it was raised or grown and the third concerns the processing after the fact.
Guidelines for sourcing meat and poultry, fish and seafood, seeds and grains, eggs and dairy, as well as vegetables and fruit, and herbs, and spices must all go through the three question process before purchase and/or consumption.
Once the food is sourced correctly, the food shaman, uses “Mindfulness, sustainability and implementation” to bring it into the spiritual and healing realm. Gratitude, balance and an execution plan are essential tools for following the shamanistic qualities and attitude toward food.
As the universe evolves, quantum food which is natural food, is starting to become more integrated into the human psyche. “In this fashion the Food Shaman through the Food Experience, applying the Art of Quantum Food, seeks to engage the spirit.”
