Short Summary

Laura Marchant is weary with comments from the Aunt who raised her, about not marrying. She spots a newspaper advertisement and on impulse, applies for the position of Companion to the pregnant wife who's boorish husband Joseph Martin, plans to take them to Australia.


As a widow now, with a little daughter, Laura finds happiness when she marries a rich Sydney man and gives the piece of gold she has clung to during her trials, to her schoolmaster friend to rebuild the Hargraves school, after it was destroyed in a vicious bush fire.
