Development Pitch

Although romance is the primary narrative, A Dangerous Act of Kindness tells a parallel story of the horrors of war, the psychology of collaboration, the humanity of enemy soldiers and the losses experienced at both a literal and symbolic level, reflecting films such as Captain Corelli’s Mandolin, Resistance and Suite Française. The story begins on a remote farm in England at the height of WW2 when young widow Millie helps an injured Luftwaffe officer Lukas. Locked away from the world by a blizzard, they build an unexpected and passionate bond which they accept cannot last. When they part, they no idea their liaison has been discovered by Millie’s friend Brigsie, who works undercover for British Intelligence. By hiding Lukas, Millie has committed an act of treason, which carries the death penalty but when Brigsie’s report reaches MI6, Lukas is offered a way to save Millie from the noose. He must help the British to discover the truth behind Hitler's war in the east. Gradually he begins to learn about the horrors committed by a country he was once proud to fight for. He ends up, a broken man, working on the land as a prisoner of war, where he comes face to face with Millie. Assuming she could never forgive him his country's atrocities, he knows they cannot be together. However, after the war ends, she finds him. If they can lay down their individual burdens of guilt, they may find happiness together.
