Short Summary

A knife kisses Matthias throat as he wakes. He is taken from the safety of his home to the wild lands where Bodiless Powers roam free. Matthias can master the black fires of Soulsteel, used to combat the Bodiless. He meets Hyrn, Swordmaster, who needs Matthias's help to combat the Bodiless.


The events of the past few decades culminate in freeing the Bodiless from the prison Matthias and Hyrn built, establishing a balance between powers. Hyrn is freed as well from the demon to which he has been bound. Hyrn establishes a balance between humanity and the Powers.

Loren W Cooper's novel CrossTown was a 2018 Finalist for the Endeavor Award and a Nebula Nominee. He'd previously won the NESFA in 1998 for best short story and the EPIC in 2001 (Best Anthology) for hisshort story collection the Lives of Ghosts. He's also published a nonfiction work, Chain of Ghosts, that grapples with fundamental questions of the nature of story.
