Short Summary

Midru, a north African slave, has a talent working with elephants. He is drawn into the war between Rome and Carthage under Hannibal. All of the famous events including the crossing of the Alps, major battles, and Hannibal's defeat by Scipio Africanus are dramatized. Open ended, for sequels.


Although Scipio defeats Hannibal, the protagonist Midru and his elephant escape from the Carthaginian army. Midru is an animal lover and not the warmonger desired by Hannibal.
