Development Pitch

Anything she wanted was hers, anything but her freedom. What if your greatest asset is uncommon beauty and you can't use it. What if everyone around you thinks you’re ugly? Now imagine that the one person who values your beauty is also the person who holds absolute power over you and will never let you go? Red Snow is the story of a Dutch captive who grows to womanhood, rises as a warlord’s concubine, and dreams of freedom to love her Russian adventurer in the twilight era of the samurai. Set against the snow-tipped peaks of Hokkaido, a Dutch girl shipwrecked upon a ruthless warlord’s shores, where she must develop cunning, embrace the samurai way and gain the warlord’s trust until the moment comes to grab freedom. Matsumae is a man who does things his way, even while pressure mounts from Edo and the shogun seeks to exterminate the last remaining lords, his possessive love for the girl who was once just a prisoner causes him to roll the dice on one last stand. He will defy the shogun. He will defy everyone to keep her, even if it means risking his lands. But a samurai is man first, the blade is his lover. As tensions rise in the castle, the Russian offers Miyako a chance to be more than a concubine, she is willing to risk everything. Think Memoirs of a Geisha meets Last Samurai with a twist on Madame Butterfly. It’s a bittersweet tale about racism, bondage and enduring hope––a romantic sojourn to a little known period in time when Japan was struggling to westernize.
