Short Summary

Dreading bullies and longing to be a sleuth, Finn gets his wish when a birthday card with an urgent plea for help whisks him to another world. His special gift is needed to find and stop a thief before the chaos he’s creating with a stolen wish machine spreads to Finn's own world and the universe.

As Finn follows the trail of clues and ruin, the thief masters the machine and gains unlimited power. Then Finn comes up with the key to solving the case—he finds the thief’s weakness and dares him to a duel of wits. Finn defeats the big bully, saves both worlds and is the sleuth he longed to be.

Development Pitch

"Wonderfully entertaining" says Midwest Book Reviews of this mystery-fantasy filled with whimsical gadgets frantically worked by Finn and friends seeking to stop a thief who’s creating chaos and even causing cities to vaporize and fill the sky with clashing colors. Dreading school bullies, Finn Grant rushes home to video games for budding detectives. But on his 11th birthday he receives a peculiar card that draws him in and whisks him away to an unpredictable world and his first real-life case. Algie, elegant master sleuth of Capriliya, has summoned Finn for his unique intuition to solve a case so strange and urgent even the master himself can’t crack it alone. Someone has stolen Jillywick’s Wishalizer, a machine that grants wishes, and is frantic to retrieve it before the thief creates worldwide chaos and destruction. But Jillywick doubts Finn can be of any use in their chase. Dodging ghost-bombs that blast monster faces on the windows and a bubble storm that bursts fizz all over them, the trio soars to crime scenes in Algie’s veg-fueled flying machine. But his special detection tools fall short against a thief achieving unlimited power. It takes Finn’s waking intuition and creative thinking to see the new approach needed. With this key, he dares the enemy-bully to a duel of wits and wins. With this new realization of both insight and valor, Finn sees he has the power to meet any challenge.
