Development Pitch

A feature film based on real events. This story is writ large here when Bernd as a young man rejects the things that had made his father most proud — to see his father’s medals not as a badge of honor but as proof of his participation in an evil legacy. Bernd Wollschlaeger’s journey embodies the generational trauma of the Holocaust and the price paid by individuals in all parts of this painful history. When Bernd Wollschaleger's children began asking him about his parents and his past, he made the decision to tell them the truth about my family and my upbringing. I wanted them to understand what so dramatically changed my life; In the quest to find answers to questions about his parents and his nation’s past, he set out to find the truth and in doing so, he found a new life and separation from family, friends, and country. His attraction to Judaism created a turmoil within me that centered somewhere between personal guilt for what had taken place and a true sense of belonging to a people and their beliefs.   Twenty years later, Bernd returned to Germany to bury his sister and finally decided to visit his parents’ grave. In a silent dialogue at their gravesite, he recalled the events leading to his life-changing decision. He discovered that he still loved and respected his parents and needed to make amends. A German Life is an opportunity to tell his story.
