Wasteland is the story about Meg, who has spent the last twelve years of her life living in the Wasteland with a protector who has kept her in the dark about her origins, and trained her to be a fighter and weapons expert. What Meg doesn’t know is that she is an Antaean: a super soldier engineered to protect the country of Sirain from its enemies, then hidden away from the very cities that sacrificed many of their own people to design her. It isn’t until an attack by a group of unidentified soldiers leaves her permanently scarred, and her protector dead that she begins to learn the truth about herself. Trying to survive in a world of strangers, Meg discovers there are more like her: other Antaeans who’ve been hidden from their enemies. Forced from the Wasteland by the loss of her protector, Meg realized she must try to locate the other Antaeans before Sirain’s enemies do - or worse, the cities’ leaders – can discover and destroy them all.

Short Summary

Meg is forced to train using a weapon she hates since it never works. When the safety features are deactivated and she fires the gun, a pulse of energy seers through her arm and out her shoulder blade. Once healed, a wave of energy flows where a scar should be, opening up questions.

After a brutal attack on her friends, Meg stands in a forest awestruck by what she's just seen, but with the help of a young girl she was able to escape the assault, partially. When Meg and Grainne survive a bomb blast feet, Meg realizes there are more like her and that she's not alone.

Development Pitch

It's a story about a young woman raised by a man who isn't her father, but her protector against the very government who had her created. Set in a post-apocalyptic US society where only three cities reign and much of the land has been destroyed. Only the leaders of these cities manipulate what the masses see, disguising the lands that surround them to resemble lush paradises instead of burnt grasses and devastated terrain. But there's more to the harsh landscape than a ruined wasteland. The cities, as well as a few individuals, pay Collectors to scavenge these lands for people to kidnap and sell to either a hatchery where women are forced to have children, to use as workers in their Burroughs, or to fight and die in their arena for pure enjoyment. The main character, Meg, is pulled into this world after her protector is killed only she doesn't realize where she belongs in this world until it's too late. She fights not only for her freedom, but for her survival when she learns not everyone is thrilled with her existence.

About The Author

I grew up in Glen Ellyn, IL, but now live in Woodridge, IL with my husband and kids. Writing has always been my passion since I was a child, creating my first short story at the age of 8. In college, I took Creative Writing and a Fiction Writing Workshop. Life got in the way, so writing was placed on hold for a while, but never forgotten. I enjoy writing science fiction, dystopian, and now fantasy.
