Development Pitch
Starting in 1989 in Mountain View, California, tragedy strikes 5-year-old ACE BOWERS when he realizes his family's status as "white trash." Off to a secondhand start, his life consists of hand-me-downs, handouts, and empty pockets, due to his alcoholic parents CHERYL and ROBERT and their paycheck-to-paycheck lifestyle. With Ace's older brother BILLY constantly in and out of jail, his sister BROOKE fleeing to college, and his mother's suicidal antics, Ace is prematurely forced to let go of childhood. While his parents face skeletons, Ace finds solace throughout high school where he relishes baseball, makes brotherly friends, and falls in love. Yet the reality of his life is that at the end of senior year, his friends and girlfriend will be moving on and Ace will remain still. As he spirals into depression - smoking a pack of cigarettes a day, eating his feelings, and getting into debt - Ace believes this is all his future holds. Sensing his defeat, Ace's bosslady aunt CINDY gives him the means to get out of town, but adulthood is no easy task. At the age of 22, Ace is thrown the biggest curveball of his life that forces him to choose which path he's going to take: continue the cycle of family poverty or break it, where his only tool is his mindset.
