About The Author

Tony Gonzalez earned his first writing award for the novella Short Order while studying theatre in college. He also gained playwriting experience there when his original musical Shakespeare’s a Bore, was performed, earning great reviews as well as fostering a love of comedic writing. Moving on from college, he was awarded a fellowship to study acting with Margo Albert. He became a member of the Plaza De La Raza Players, studied at Lincoln Park and toured throughout the Los Angeles area. He soon gained professional status by becoming a member of Actors’ Equity. This proved to be a very rewarding experience that included traveling to San Diego and being involved with the Los Angeles Music Center’s performance of A Christmas Carol. As other opportunities developed, Jacque Faure, an associate of then Los Angeles mayor, Tom Bradley, took Tony’s two-act play Life Minus E to a run at Guy Stockwell’s Stage II Theatre on Melrose Avenue. Around this time he received an award from the American Song Festival for his song Never Loved Before. His recent writing awards include the International Film Competition Festival’s Silver Award for Yonder. Other awarded screenplays include The Piano Gospel, which is a 2018 finalist in the Kairos Prize Award for spiritually uplifting screenplays as well as best screenplay in the Christian Film Festival and finalist status in many other film festivals, including: The Page Awards and Fresh Voices. Additionally, his screenplay “Damascus” earned recognition in the International Family and Faith Screenwriting competition. Tony has produced and written television commercials for the caregiving community in Reno, Nevada as well as performed as on-air talent for local music station, KUUB. He is currently working on an 80,000 word piece of non-fiction with renowned author/editor Lisa Dale Norton. Plans are in the works for a digital comedy series, Pudgy’s Place.

Accuracy of Book Profile

Yes, the book profile accurately reflects the book.

Draw of Story

The story is from a young boy's perspective, learning about the world but experiencing a life altering event. His time spent in hospitals, needing operations is compelling especially set in the 1960's.

Possible Drawbacks

This is an average story. It is a coming of age story about a young boy. There isn't much conflict in Tony's life to make for a riveting plot.

Use of Special Effects

THE STORY DOES NOT RELY ON SPECIAL EFFECTS

Primary Hook of Story

Tony faces many physical challenges but overcomes and goes off to lead a normal life. This movie would be a coming of age story that is generally introspective and informative which is a change of pace from the normal film fare.

Fanbase Potential

This would not have a large fanbase. There is little to grip the audience. It is about a young white privileged boy who faces some difficult moments but moves forward to live a normal life.

Awards Potential

This does not have awards potential. The story is average and lacks inspiration. It is a chapter in Tony's world but outside of his physical difficulties, there is nothing overtly interesting.

Envisioned Budget

MEDIUM BUDGET

What’s New About the Story

The story is original in its' perspective of Tony's time in the hospital. He is 10 years old, not grasping all that his happening to him or around him. His viewpoint is intriguing considering he would now be considered disabled.

Lead Characters

Tony is a young white boy growing up lower, middle class in the 1960's. He has all of the same questions, issues and thoughts related to a boy of his time. There is nothing inherently unique about him.

Uniqueness of Story

This is an average story. It is a coming of age story about a young boy. There isn't much conflict in Tony's life to make for a riveting plot.

Analyst Recommendation

WORK IN PROGRESS

Justification

While the story has many positive points, it has room for improvement (see possible paths below). If you can't change the story at this point, my suggestion is using your notes as a guide to highlight the best aspects of it when taking the next steps, either putting a pitch page together, a treatment, or a presentation.

Tips for Improvement

This story needs more gravitas. Tony's time in the hospital and coming to terms with his disability is interesting but he leads a relatively normal life afterwards. Teenage angst and family problems are normal but nothing extraordinary. This could translate to screen with the right vision. It is character driven so the right direction of the story, focusing on Tony's emotional growth could create more depth.
