Development Pitch

As a young woman, Cassy faces breast cancer like a warrior. Her character growth is immense as she stands steadfast in her decisions, all the while thinking of Harly's wellbeing. Harly's faithfulness and support throughout Cassy's battle is swoonworthy to say the least. He's the man every woman wants by their side when life turns sour. This is an emotional story that will grip people as they're taken on Cassy and Harly's journey. The characters are relatable, and viewers will connect with them. It's a story of courage, sacrifice and how you should chase your dreams, even if it scares you. I believe viewers will be inspired, moved, and intrigued by not only Cassy and Harly, but by the supporting characters as well. I particularly envision young women identifying with Cassy and because this story centers around breast cancer, many will relate. For all the hopeless romantics in the world, this story will be a winner because throughout all the trials, the love story of Cassy and Harly cannot be denied. The twists and unique nature of Harly's dreams is something audiences will find intriguing and the passion between Cassy and Harly will tick all the boxes for viewers who enjoy their romances with some tasteful steam. Suitable for audiences 18+, The Perseverance of Us is a film that needs to be seen!

About The Author

Born and raised in sunny South Africa, my travels took me firstly to England and then to New Zealand, where I settled for 10 years. Upon return to England with my husband and two boisterous sons, I left the corporate world behind and took on the new adventure of being a stay-at-home mum. It was during this time, at the age of 37, that I summoned the courage to do what I have loved to do since teenagehood โ€“ to write, to bring the characters in my head to life in the form of a first novel, which I had started 10 years ago but never finished. In my spare time, I love to bake for my family, read, and of course, submerge myself in the creative pool of bringing characters to life and threading narratives together. The Perseverance of Us is the second book I have published.

Accuracy of Book Profile

The logline and the short summary does not reflect the entire narrative. The logline begins a narrative that is continued in the short summary rather than being two standalone categories. The short summary start with the beginning of the story and jumps to the end of the story. The logline should describe the entire narrative in two sentences while the short summary expands the summary to about a paragraph. By including Harly's amnesia, the short summary profile would much better reflect the narrative as this is the central focus of the middle part of the book.

Draw of Story

Cassy's struggle as a young teenager diagnosed with breast cancer is compelling. It is a rare narrative that is not often shown. The added layer that her life is now public interest makes her struggle even harder.

Possible Drawbacks

The characters are too solidly in love that it is usually unclear what the inner tension is outside of the external conflict. For example, Cassidy rarely doubts Harly's love even when he can't remember her and while there is a brief bout of infidelity with Dr. Nolan, there is no lasting impact to any tension to their relationship.

Use of Special Effects

Primary Hook of Story

The hook is that just as Cassidy has finished beating breast cancer, her husband has an accident and can't remember her.

Fanbase Potential

Given the rich world it is set and the representation of cancer as a plot point without a tragic ending, this could have a medium size audience of romance fans.

Awards Potential

Given its romance heavy focus with just a few small subplots about social issues, this is unlikely to get nominated for serious awards, but depending on the popularity could win more entertainment based awards such as MTV or VH1.

Whatโ€™s New About the Story

The originality of the story stems from Cassidy's experience with getting a false diagnosis and then fighting breast cancer as a teenager. By focusing on the effect it has on her marriage and fertility rather than switching the Harly's dilemma, the singular conflict might be more cohesive.

Lead Characters

Cassy is described by others as tenacious and fiesty. She shows that she is kind and loyal beyond measure and brave for fighting cancer in public. Harly is steadfast and devoted with an unmatched sentimentality and protective flair.

Uniqueness of Story

This has some potential but the love is too strong to have sustained tension that builds throughout the narrative. The two problems of cancer and amnesia seem like separate stories rather than a continuation of a transformation of inner conflicts.

Analyst Recommendation

While the story has many positive points, it has room for improvement (see possible paths below). If you can't change the story at this point, my suggestion is using your notes as a guide to highlight the best aspects of it when taking the next steps, either putting a pitch page together, a treatment, or a presentation.

Tips for Improvement

Making sustainable tension with lasting consequences (separate from Harly's twin drama also included in the first book of the series) might help make the two conflicts feel more cohesive. Also the narrative of breast cancer upending normal life and on top of being a rich newlywed is quite compelling but very separate from amnesia, so possibly separating the story in two on the protagonists' journey towards a family might allow for strengthened themes and more intentional pacing.
