Short Summary

Three ships left the Spanish seaport of Palos de la Frontera on the morning of August 3, 1492, on a western route to the West Indies. The Portuguese had been unsuccessfully trying to sail around Africa to get to the West Indies, without leaving sight of land.

After finding little gold, on August 3, 1493, Columbus returned to Spain — minus one ship — to convince the Spanish Monarchy that his voyage was a success. He returned with between ten and twenty-five Native Americans, Taínos (Ty-EE-nos), but only eight survived.

Development Pitch

Darkness They Could Not See takes you on an adventure-filled voyage on the high seas. It is a historical fiction novel about Christopher Columbus’s first voyage in 1492, a time when sailors never went beyond the sight of land. With scurvy taking down the crew and discontent at a crescendo, Columbus's life hangs by a thread. Experience this unforgettable story through the eyes of a cabin boy, the Admiral, and a beautiful Taíno (Ty-EE-nos) princess called Higuamota (the Bloodwoman.) Lose yourself in a world of adventure and conquest. When reputation means taking risks far beyond imagination. As thirty-foot waves crash against the hull of the Santa Maria, Columbus has to find a way to quash the boiling discontent among his crew or die. A high octane adventure based on historical facts.
