Brief
Unwittingly sucked into time traveling by a shadowy organization, a ruthless killer discovers truths that contradict everything the world knows about the Christian faith.
What We Liked
- An alternative perspective of the traditional evolution of Christianity challenges the faithful and skeptics alike.
- A feature adaptation of the story probably remains the most logical. The time travel to exotic locations in the distant past and the large scale violence outlined in the book are cinematic in nature.
- Adapting the book into a limited television series would be an easy transition. The structure lends itself to the episodic format and the thriller aspect of the story would be served well by building suspense from episode to episode.
- Key points: Two strong female leads; Sequel/franchise potential; Challenges traditional ideology; Sinister villain; Provocative storyline.
Synopsis
Ruthless killer, Gabriel, is doubled crossed by his partner, Rooks. It results in Gabriel being savagely injured, shot and left for dead. He is taken to a shadowy laboratory where he is placed in a gas chamber full of human body parts. He finds himself in another time and he arrives just in time to save a young woman called Maria Virginia from being brutally raped. She removes the bullet lodged in his body and nurses him back to health, discovering objects can travel in time as well. During his recovery, they teach other their different languages and learn to communicate with each other. They make love a single time and she calls him her angel.
Gabriel meets a young orphan called Simon and he invites him to live in his farm and help him get it functioning again. Gabriel meets a young prostitute called Mari Magdelan. They fall in love with each other, but they can’t be together because she is property of Commander Pontius Pilate. Maria Virgina gives birth to Jeshua in Simon’s barn among animals. Jeshua is Gabriel’s son, but Gabriel never finds out.
Before he knows it, Gabriel finds himself back in his present time. He is told by Arilio, a leader of the group who is experimenting in time travel, that he must go back. Once again Gabriel finds himself in the strange land, but it is now 33 years later. Mari is now a grown woman whose fiancé, Jeshua, is going to be crucified by Pontius Pilate and the Romans. Gabriel promises to help her save Jeshua. With Simon’s help, Gabriel is able to fool the Romans into thinking that Jeshua died on the cross. In reality, another man’s body was put in his place and Gabriel helped hide Jeshua, Mari and Maria Virginia in a cave until it was safe to emerge.
Gabriel returns back to present where Arilio tells him that Jeshua and Mari had 12 sons. On the night before he died, during the last supper, Jeshua gave each of his sons a book and assigned them a religion of the world. Each son did well with his assignment with the exception of Judas. He was in charge of Judaism. He struggled because he didn’t believe and ultimately killed himself because he was ashamed to disappoint his father. Ever since then the world has been in chaos and upheaval. Arilio tells Gabriel he will be sent back in time once again. This time he is to destroy the books to keep them out of the hands of Jeshua’s 12 sons, thus making the world a more peaceful place and without religion.
