Short Summary

Pre-teens Emil and Miron experience the shocking spectacle of waves of refugees fleeing the Nazi invasion of eastern Poland pushing through their town. The boys innocence and naive patriotism are shattered as they help Dr. Brokowski--Emil's father--with wounded and retreating Polish soldiers.

After years of guerrilla action Emil and the rebels cheer as the Germans are driven out, only to face Soviet occupation. Emil is forced into Communist training, and his friend Vincent joins the Russian Army, still fighting Nazis to the end. Dr. Brokowski finds peace in working for a new Poland.

Development Pitch

We open with the Polish and Jewish citizens of Doblina as they react to defeat by the Nazis with a stunned disbelief that evolves to anger, sullen co-operation, resistance, and, finally, rebellion and bittersweet victory. 'Doblina' is a four-novel saga that covers five years of brutal occupation. How deep is a person's reservoir of hope? How do they find the will to get out of bed each morning? This is NOT a holocaust story, per se, but it certainly comes for Doblina's Jews. It was only then the Christian Poles began to see that they were next. 'Doblina' is a multi-year, multi-character story perfectly suited for long-form TV or cable. The saga is filled with heartfelt drama and tragedy, but not a lot of vast spectacle. Death and violence are commonplace, but life still goes on with romance, passion, marriage, and births. True to the title, each segment of the book resembles scenes in a film--the scope of the book is too wide with too many characters for a 'traditional' novel structure.

About The Author

'Doblina' is the product of several years of deep research and the saga is told in four novels, pushing my total of published novels to seven. I have a BA in Journalism from the University of Kansas, and my primary career was as a sound engineer working in film, TV, and animation in Los Angeles.
