Helbrook is an alcohol and drug rehab center for troubled teenage children and their last opportunity to get their lives in order or be placed in a reformatory until they reached the age of adulthood where they would be sent to jail or prison.

Short Summary

It was a hot, humid night as I sat on the ground shivering in my own raw, debilitating coldness. The flashing red and blue lights danced in somber silence amidst the oak covered lawn, as a possession of fog laden images passed before me.

A little over three years has passed since that final night. It wasn't until I was well into my second year following the tragedy that I was told who had lived and who had died during those three days and nights.

Development Pitch

Mark Longstreet, the former retired Marine Corps Sergeant and Silver Star recipient believed he had seen and experienced the epitome of human cruelty during his tour of duty in the Vietnam War. He was to discover that the evils he witnessed in Vietnam would tragically and terrifyingly be challenged by what he was to experience at his first job as a therapist at Helbrook Substance Abuse Center located in North Florida. Helbrook was an alcohol and drug rehab center for troubled teenage children and their last opportunity to get their lives in order or be placed in a reformatory until they reached the age of adulthood where they would be sent to jail or prison. Mark himself had previous long bouts with alcohol after losing his two teenage children within a year of each other. Mark would fall in love with the boys and girls he was about to meet at Helbrook, as well as a young therapist, Claudia Calvert. This story certainly isn’t for the faint of heart, yet in reality it is a beautiful love story as many as these kids respond to Mark’s kindness and compassion, accomplishing great strides in getting their young lives back together. In the end however, a terrible and horrible fate awaited many of these kids as well as Mark and many of the people working there.

Accuracy of Book Profile

Book profile reflects book accurately.

Draw of Story

The tragic setting of the first scene is enough to capture audience's curiosity in order to find out what had happened to the narrator and author's dynamic writing style is capable of holding this attention throughout the book.

Possible Drawbacks

Nothing made me want to put the book down; however revision must be performed in order to correct punctuation such as quotation marks and general formatting.

Use of Special Effects

Primary Hook of Story

The hook of the story is certainly the tragedies and tales involved in the life of the 'junkies' who are, most of the time, dubious characters; and also the curiosity to find out what happened to Mark's family.

Fanbase Potential

If adapted, it could have a large fanbase, especially if 'junkies' personalities were worked on with impressive acting and visuals.

Awards Potential

It could have awards potential if adapted, especially because the narrative deals with mental illness, drug abuse and there's a lot of tragedy involved - good screenwriting, acting and directing needed.

Envisioned Budget

What’s New About the Story

The most original thing about this story is the emotional involvement of a war veteran within the life stories of these children who could be devils and angels at the same time. However, if tragedies were toned down a bit they could become more credible.

Lead Characters

Mark is the flawed hero who doesn't get a happy ending. The most interesting thing about this character is the vulnerability behind this seemingly impenetrable man. This is shown as he had his life destroyed by his job in the Center.

Uniqueness of Story

I believe Mark's arc could be worked on to make the story more plausible; the tragedies happening in his life may sometimes seem too much to believe and therefore relate to.
