Development Pitch

CIA officer Chase Moreno has a rep for being reckless, but she always gets her guy. And following the death of her partner on a mission eighteen months ago, she always works alone. But when the Company orders her to seek out and join forces with DEA Special Agent Jonathan Harper to bring down a Russian crime syndicate, she has no choice but to play nice. There’s one tiny problem: they can’t stand each other. But as the case and their personal lives—and baggage—become more tightly entwined, it’s impossible for either of them to deny their growing attraction. However, duty calls...and it always comes first. If it doesn’t, it could cost them the case. Or their lives. *** The Mood For Trouble is the first book in a planned series, with a published sequel and another on the way. This would make an excellent film or TV series as it features a brilliant, badass woman, a strong male counterpart, thrilling fight and action sequences, and steamy romance. It highlights women empowerment and healthy, balanced love, as well as delving into the gritty criminal underworld and the sleek flashiness and mysterious appeal of three-letter organizations.

About The Author

Meredith Allison hails from the home of the Big Red, aka, Lincoln, NE. After graduating from UNL, she went on to receive her MFA from Creighton University. Her love of writing began when she was a child, where she wrote short stories about girls her age. This transformed into angsty poetry during equally angsty teen years. As an adult, she enjoys writing about historical organized crime and contemporary espionage thrillers, all featuring strong, intelligent, courageous women who may or may not be able to be labeled “heroines.” When she’s not writing, Meredith works with authors through her editing business, The Persnickety Proofer, and as a contractor with Enchanted Ink Publishing to help writers hone their voices, Swiffer their sentences, and craft the stories they were always meant to write. In her free time, Meredith is an avid reader. She also has a passion for video games, cooking, eating, kickboxing, and romping with her pets.

Accuracy of Book Profile

Yes, the book profile accurately reflects the book.

Draw of Story

The story begins with a sexy encounter between the two main characters. Harper is trying to infiltrate the Russian mob and meets Moreno, who is undercover as well. Sparks fly but quickly turn sour when they are forced to work together to accomplish the mission.

Possible Drawbacks

There were moments that felt unrealistic considering the stakes and what audiences know about the life of a spy. Most spy stories enforce the idea that they live a solitary existence with no contact with family or friends; too much danger. Moreno still sees her family and is the maid of honor in her sister's wedding while Harper sees his daughter as often as he can. There are some dangerous people coming for them but they resume civilian life regularly.

Use of Special Effects

Primary Hook of Story

The hook is that Moreno and Harper are from two different government agencies that must work together to bring down the Russian mafia. The romance between the two characters would interest me. There are many endearing moments as well as classic action scenes.

Fanbase Potential

This could have a large fanbase. Many action films where the characters fall in love have been appealing to large audiences. It has your classic bad guys, shooting sequences with some romance thrown in.

Awards Potential

This does not have awards potential. While entertaining, this story is not unique and does not have any extensive character arcs.

What’s New About the Story

There is nothing original about the story. There have been many spy action stories where romances blossoms between the characters. I could be more unique if the characters were more racially and culturally diverse as well as the villains. Russian mafia has been done as much as the Italian mafia. They could also be in different parts of the to make the story more unique as well.

Lead Characters

The lead characters stand out slightly because they have personal lives to worry about. Most times, characters who are spies have no ties to family or friends because of the danger by association. Moreno is a strong female lead but not uniquely so.

Uniqueness of Story

This is a solid action story. It has more heart than other spy thrillers because Harper is trying to be there for his daughter. Harper is shown as a dad and not just as a spy. There is personal conflicts for the characters outside of the romantic feeling for each other.

Analyst Recommendation

This story is a consider because it has all the elements of a good action film. It does not, however, break any new ground or introduce anything spectacular to the genre. The romance is sweet but the relationship and how there feelings develop is standard storytelling. It could work with a non-white cast and a unique location.
