There should be more focus on the good deeds he accomplish after he realizes who he is instead of the mundane details of his life leading up to it.

The story is original because it deals with reincarnation in the Catholic religion which normally is tied with Eastern religions. Matt is seen using his connection with God and The Virgin Mary to help solve crimes. That is not original.
