Development Pitch

oth the cyberpunk release Altered Carbon and Marvel’s Jessica Jones have proven successful with audiences. This is a clear indicator that sci-fi detective stories are on the rise. The Cassie Tam Files would not only plug the female PI gap left by Jessica Jones but also provide general audiences something accessible but with a cyberpunk edge. The story is set in the near future and so stands to capture fans of futuristic tech while still being familiar enough for fans of soft sci-fi. Standing in this middle ground between Jessica Jones and Altered Carbon means that it has the potential to cast a wide net in terms of potential viewership. The series has been described as Sam Spade meets Blade Runner. While tonally similar Addict fits better with our current world. The overarching plot is one of corrupt businessmen and politicians and the negatives of over-reliance on technology, all of which are familiar themes today. That the PI is a Chinese-Canadian lesbian also reflects our modern diverse society. As such, the books are perfect for adaption into a series/series of movie. I believe that the story would shine filmed in a stylized manner, using the darker visual tones of the noir era, but with modern effects and cinematography. However, I would be happy to leave it in the hands of any studio with a clear vision. After all, at its heart, it is simply a hardboiled detective story with a futuristic setting. There are so many ways you can successfully portray that.

About The Author

Matt Doyle is an award-nominated author and pop culture blogger from the UK. He identifies as pansexual and genderfluid and writes speculative fiction featuring LGBT characters whose sexual orientation is simply a part of them and not the focus of the story. Readers have praised his blending of genres, with his most recent series, The Cassie Tam Files, being described as Sam Spade meets Blade Runner with a lesbian PI. Addict, the first book in the series, won an honorable mention in the lesbian sci-fi category in 2017’s international LGBT book awards, The Rainbow Awards. It currently holds a four-star average on Goodreads after seventy-nine ratings and the series regularly appears in the top 100 of Amazon’s LGBT science fiction kindle chart.
