Mathos is a Phoenician mercenary, killed by his own arrogance. He steals from the devil and escapes with another soul, Hermes, intent on getting into heaven. They manage to hatch a scheme to get the attention of the heavenly host, and set about double crossing each other.

Short Summary

Mathos guards his masters marketplace stall in disguise. He catches a boy trying to set the stall on fire, and a confrontation with the city guard ensues. Mathos cuts the boys ear off as punishment.

Mathos battles angels in front of the gates of heaven. He is allowed to enter and meet God, who shows him his life and how he could have used his talents for the benefit of others. God then gives him a new purpose, and uses him as an example to show that no-one can subvert God's will to their own.

Development Pitch

Mathos is a Phoenician mercenary who spends three thousand years in Hell. He helps another soul named Hermes to steal a tool from the devil, and they escape. They try to use the tool as a bargaining chip to get into heaven, but its doesn't work. They find another way to use the tool to upset the natural balance which gains the attention of heaven. Hermes' double cross of Mathos doesn't work, and he is destroyed. Mathos continues with the plan until he is confronted by the Archangel Michael. They fight, and ascend to heaven for a fair fight. God puts an end to the battle by talking directly to Mathos. He shows him how his life could have been more useful, and then uses him as an example to anyone else who try to subvert his will. The story would work well as a film as there is intrigue as well a great deal of action. Mathos is the anti hero that the audience will root for, and he will almost achieve his aims before being sent back to hell. Some people will be disappointed that he didn't make it, and others will be happy that he got his just desserts.
