Short Summary

A once idyllic meadow, home to animals, birds, insects, ancient apple trees and wildflowers is clear cut by a loud, smelly, bulldozer, to make way for new construction. Miraculously, one lonely little dandelion survives. When her golden petals turn to white fluff she goes in search of a new home.

Our heroine flourishes, and is soon joined by many other dandelions in her new environment. By contributing their edible flowers and leaves to the farm family's daily menus (as well as medicinal needs) they help to ensure a promising and bright sustainable future for Planet Earth.

Development Pitch

An animated color film short with a narrator (7-12 minutes long) that is fun, adventurous, engaging and informative. A quality educational teaching "tool" appropriate for grades 1-5.

About The Author

As a Certified Permaculture Designer Jill's focus is on creating sustainable, organic indoor and outdoor spaces for living and growing food. She created and, for many years, lived on a homestead in Vermont, such as the one described in the book. As a Natural Foods Chef/teacher & Restaurateur she is passionate about preparing and eating organic, local seasonal food and embracing an earth-friendly lifestyle. As a mother and grandmother, she believes that inspiring young students to embrace ecologically sound environmental practices is the key to saving Planet Earth. Jill's practice of Permaculture (Permanent-Agriculture) takes its cues from and imitates Nature. The tenacity of her little dandelion "guru" inspired this contemporary fable.

Accuracy of Book Profile

The book profile accurately reflects the book.

Draw of Story

The illustrations for the story had an interesting combination of minimalist design with vibrant colors.

Possible Drawbacks

The story's message feels a bit ham-fisted at times. The protagonist, fairly quickly, just feels like a megaphone for the author to preach about sustainable living rather than a fully fleshed-out character with an emotional arc. This can be avoided by setting up the dandelion character with a tangible want/desire that they actively pursue throughout the story. The author can use the obstacles and other characters the protagonist encounters to communicate the themes of the story. As written, the protagonist basically just sees a new home that seems nice and settles down, effectively ending the story as soon as it moves and leaving the majority of the story as an extended "resolution" detailing why the dandelion's new home is better than the last.

Use of Special Effects

THE STORY DOES NOT RELY ON SPECIAL EFFECTS

Primary Hook of Story

The hook is showing the harm and the good humans can do to the environment from the P.O.V. of a dandelion.

Fanbase Potential

I don't see this having a large fanbase due to this story not being very adaptable to the tv/film medium. This story could just as easily be an informative pamphlet on sustainable living due to the lack of an arc for the protagonist and no real conflict in the story. The majority of the story is detailing how the family the dandelion encounters practices sustainable living.

Awards Potential

The only way I can see this story garnering awards/acclaim is through a reworking of the concept. The dandelion should experience a journey to finding a new home, complete with obstacles, fleshed out-characters that help/derail it on the way, and having a resonant message that is universal or allows for discussion about the themes the author is trying to convey like the benefits of sustainable living.

Envisioned Budget

MEDIUM BUDGET

Similar Films/TV Series

FILMS SUCH AS "WATERSHIP DOWN", "THE LORAX", "CHICKEN RUN", "BAMBI", AND "FINDING NEMO" ARE SIMILAR TO THIS STORY AS THEY FEATURE AN ANTHROPOMORPHIC PROTAGONIST AND ENVIRONMENTAL THEMES.

What’s New About the Story

The story is unique in having its main theme convey the benefits and importance of sustainable living. Also, using a plant as a protagonist is not often seen in film/tv. The goal/journey of the protagonist could be more unique. Perhaps, the dandelion becomes deeply impacted by the destruction of its home and becomes a paranoid crusader, seeking to warn other plant life to leave their homes before humans encroach upon it. However, upon meeting a group of plants living on a sustainable farm, learns of the positive impact humans can have on the environment. This is just an "off-the-top" idea that allows for more characterization and a stronger arc for the protagonist to follow.

Lead Characters

The fact that the main character is a dandelion, stands out because plants aren't usually the protagonists in stories featuring anthropomorphism.

Uniqueness of Story

I believe tweaking the story to have memorable characters and a clear goal/conflict can make it stand out as a fun story with an important environmental message. However, as currently written the story does not fully stand out.
