Development Pitch

MOVIEPITCH DOUBLE PLAY Jailhouse author, Caryl Chessman, whose death sentence for crimes of the Red Light Bandit was commuted, meets a San Quentin Death Row convict who wants to confess his story before he dies. He is Jack Ruby, killer of Robert Kennedy. He tells of a 1963 plot to overthrow the Government by assassinating President Kennedy and Vice President Johnson simultaneously in separate, but linked attacks. The attempt on Kennedy was thwarted by an agent, Lee Harvey Oswald, working for Attorney General Robert Kennedy, but Johnson was killed. Ruby led an innocent lookalike decoy , who has been named by the conspirators ‘Lee Harvey Oswald’, to be shot by Dallas police as the assassin. The conspirators hunt Oswald for five years, finding him working as a bodyguard for Robert Kennedy who is running for President. Ruby is tricked into being part of a fake assassination attempt, whilst actually killing Oswald in revenge for his treachery. Kennedy is, as intended, also murdered by unknown gunmen and Ruby is blamed. Ruby provides evidence to Chessman who is ready to write his book, but is distracted when Charles Manson, on Death Row, indicates he knows the identity of the Red Light Bandit. Chessman does not know if Manson is baiting him for refusing to write a book favourable to Manson. Ruby dies, and almost immediately, the ‘Red Light Bandit’ is murdered in prison. Chessman suspects Manson’s influence, and decides to write Ruby’s story, “Double Play”.
