Development Pitch

The Matchmaker: Angela Calminetti, mother of five, New Age practitioner and gifted psychic and telepath, is proud of her family ties and does everything she can to make sure that all of her younger siblings are as happy in love and marriage as she is…whether they want her to or not. Former Madison Avenue ad exec EJ Vega just landed a seven-figure advance from Renegade Publishing. Older sister Evelyn convinces him he needs a fashion makeover before he goes on his first national book tour and has just the person in mind to turn his wardrobe inside out. EJ, too late, recognizes the handiwork of his oldest, matchmaking sister Angela, and by the time he realizes what he's gotten himself into, a very hot and uptight personal shopper has invaded more than just his wardrobe; she's invaded his soul. From a broken home and driven by past demons, Tabitha Lyons is the proprietor of flourishing Lyons Style, Inc. and knows success when she sees it. In EJ she sees not just success, but sexy and sin with a capital "S." She doesn't want to turn his wardrobe inside out as much as she knows EJ will turn her world upside down... The first in a series focusing on familial ties, with themes of healing and redemption, Beneath the Surface shows what it means to survive past tragedy and make a relationship work through the good and bad.

About The Author

A native New Yorker, Gracie C. McKeever has been writing since the ripe old age of seven when two younger brothers were among her earliest, captive audience for various short story readings and performances. She has since gone on to author several decidedly more grown-up novels, novellas and series most of which can be found at Siren Publishing under multiple sub-genres beneath the erotic romance umbrella. Of particular note: her BDSM/GLBTQ/Interracial/Historical/Ménage/Paranormal/Western, Three Men and a Bounty; her GLBTQ/Interracial/Paranormal trilogy, Zara’s Bois; and her erotic short story, Leap of Faith that appears in Zane’s 2009 anthology, Sensuality: Caramel Flava II.

Accuracy of Book Profile

Yes, it does.

Draw of Story

The idea of someone with psychic powers going into a romantic relationship.

Possible Drawbacks

There are too many sex-oriented scenes, that could be fewer, more impactful and less repetitive.

Use of Special Effects

THE STORY DOES NOT RELY ON SPECIAL EFFECTS

Primary Hook of Story

The whole central plot involving sexual conquest and falling in love.

Fanbase Potential

Maybe it could, with many alterations, in the same vein of Fifty Shades of Grey.

Awards Potential

No, it is not at all the kind of story prized by Awards in general.

Envisioned Budget

MEDIUM BUDGET

What’s New About the Story

The idea of introducing psychic powers into a torrid, romantic story. However, this aspect should be more displayed throughout the story.

Lead Characters

EJ and Tabitha are both very different, and that is why they complete each other. Even though they both operate as clichés of the romantic genre, they end up showing some different aspects of their personalities.

Uniqueness of Story

Not really. The narrative should invest more in its psychic powers' aspect, because other than that it is just a very clichéd romantic/erotic story.

Analyst Recommendation

WORK IN PROGRESS

Justification

While the story has many positive points, it has room for improvement (see possible paths below). If you can't change the story at this point, my suggestion is using your notes as a guide to highlight the best aspects of it when taking the next steps, either putting a pitch page together, a treatment, or a presentation.

Tips for Improvement

The dialogue and interactions between the characters feel too unnatural to be credible. If adapted, there should be many changes in order to make these actions more realistic for the public. There is also an excess of sexual content in the book, which could be an issue when adapting it to the screen. There might be no problem in having explicit scenes, but the book overemphasizes how excited the lead characters are around each other. These moments end up being weird, repetitive and tiresome, and could be made more condensed and impactful in an adaptation. The story itself also seems somewhat forced, taking too much time to establish the central couple, stopping them from being together many times without believable reasons. Furthermore, the final conflict is resolved too fast and too easily, not leaving time enough for the public to really feel bad for the pair's separation. As a whole, the story is still a bit derivative. Its most intriguing aspect, which is EJ's ability to read minds, is left aside for the most part of the narrative and doesn't play as essential a part as it should in the central plot. If adapted, this is a crucial point that should be changed to make the story more compelling for the audience.
