Development Pitch

Eles conhecem a professora Zilda.

Accuracy of Book Profile

It is accurate, but the author could add more characters to the profile, such as Zhaíra, to make the file more complete.

Draw of Story

The story starts with movement and action. We already begin the journey inside the hidden realm of Aqualândia, on a misconduct judgment. As it is a hidden realm, the reader's expectation is that we would only get to know this place along with the characters, but the author gives us the chance to get to know it earlier, which is interesting, as he transforms the expectation for the place into the expectation concerning how the kids will get there and what will happen once there.

Possible Drawbacks

The amount of myths and mythological stories told by the characters end up making the narrative tiring because in addition to following the central story, we still have to follow these mythological stories, which often don't have much connection with the plot. It's interesting to understand a little mythology, even more to better follow the story with mythological beings, but this over-telling of tales ends up giving a feeling of being lost and being tiring.

Use of Special Effects

THE STORY RELIES HEAVILY ON SPECIAL EFFECTS

Primary Hook of Story

Despite the children's search for their mother, the story's hook is, in fact, the presence of mythological beings, the search for the portal of the hidden kingdom, and the story of the witch Zhaíra. Above all, the author mixes mythological types, which makes the plot more interesting.

Fanbase Potential

It would attract an audience that likes mythological beings and this most fantastic bias. However, if the narrative remained more cohesive and direct, with less lecture tone, in which it feels like we are constantly being taught about something, the narrative would be more intriguing.

Awards Potential

The narrative flooded by Brazilian and Greco-Roman mythological beings is indeed exciting, and it seems that the author dived into these subjects. Still, while we know many stories about folklore and myth, we end up loosening ourselves a bit from the central narrative. If the author focused more on the central quest of the story, on the struggle of these low-income children, and on the preservation of the mythological culture as a whole, he would have a better chance of winning awards.

What’s New About the Story

The mixture of different types of mythological beings is in fact original. Mixing goddess Juno with Saci, with gnomes and fairies ends up encompassing almost the entire fantastical universe that we know about. And seeing Brazilian mythological beings in the plot makes the story even more original.

Lead Characters

The twins are brave and bold, and go out in search of what they want, which is great for a protagonist. However, each of them could have a more unique voice, more diverse from each other, especially because they talk all the time, through the whole book, and having two very similar characters speaking for so long can be tiring. The figure of Zilda, a teacher who transforms into a young bat-witch, and who has a window of time to use powers, is indeed intriguing, but her character could be more useful to the central plot itself. Some characters there like Morgiana, and other villagers, seem to be there with the sole intention of telling tales for the kids, and consequently for us. Morgiana has the qualities to be a fascinating character, but she could be better developed, gaining more voice, more own style, and more functions in the plot.

Uniqueness of Story

It is not. It has good thematic research and good ideas, but the language, tone, and structure could be better constructed to make the plot more original and more modern.

Analyst Recommendation

WORK IN PROGRESS

Justification

While the story has many positive points, it has room for improvement (see possible paths below). If you can't change the story at this point, my suggestion is using your notes as a guide to highlight the best aspects of it when taking the next steps, either putting a pitch page together, a treatment, or a presentation.

Tips for Improvement

As it is a story for the whole family, including children and teenagers, the language could be more popular, more straightforward like oral language. Words such as "alfarrábios" (meaning old book, second-hand book, in Portuguese), although correct, are totally distant from the oral language. This ends up distancing the audience. A looser, more colloquial, more modern language could attract more such a broad target. Not only does the language sound old-fashioned, but some situations sound too. The witch Zhaíra is sentenced to many years of punishment for exchanging hidden island elements with beauty products. She could be condemned for endangering the islanders but not for her desire to be pretty. In today's world, this kind of thinking sounds old-fashioned. The tone of the dialogues also sounds like a lecture. The way the characters tell about mythology seems to go far beyond mutual curiosity and becomes like a lesson. A change in the dialogues so that they sound more organic and natural would be great. Some situations are too quickly resolved. For example, when Morgiana disappears for a while, people go after her, desperate. Then, they meet the teacher Zilda, who simply says "she should be back soon," and people stop looking, agreeing with her. Actions that generate this kind of expectation in the public are excellent, but the actions need to be a little longer-lasting, look more dangerous, and be solved in a not-so-simple way. Starting the story in the hidden realm is an original way to start these stories, but presenting a wonderful and enchanted realm with a trial and a conviction, is not a negative way to introduce these people? Even before we empathize with them, we already see a negative environment where people judge others. Is this the best way to present this story? Worth the reflection.
