Development Pitch

A romance through and through, love is what shines in this book from the very start. A down-home love story if there ever was one, this is a good twist on the childhood sweetheart trope, even if full of cliches. Turning that on its head, Jessica gets to experience true love for the first time as an adult, and in the last place she expected. The timeline restriction of just over one year that they place on their own relationship is a unique feature, and playing that up even more could be to the benefit of the story. Instead, the entire book takes place over approximately two months, Halloween to Christmas, so the expiration date doesn’t really come into play. Jessica’s characterization is fresh and fun, and she feels so nuanced for a romantic comedy. She’s witty and smart and sort of an outsider, but she’s not afraid to embrace her more feminine — and even sexy — side. This is refreshing, as so often smart women characters are relegated to being just that, or to not knowing they’re attractive. Jessica is a great mix of both, and her commitment to her travel dreams is inspiring inspiring. She’s a protagonist for here and now, and it’s easy to see women in the audience wanting to be her and looking up to her. The small town setting is also charming, and the book thrives when it leans into that element. This story would make for the sweetest romantic comedy, and romantic comedies are always in style.
