Development Pitch
Hidden Place is the story of a biracial friendship that endures against all odds in 1860’s Virginia. Catherine, the daughter of a plantation owner, forms a close friendship with the son of one of her family’s slaves, Will, as they grow up together. They have a strong and special bond that is purely platonic. But on the eve of her wedding to someone else, her father finds her celebrating with Will and misinterprets their relationship. He promptly sells Will to a sadistic plantation owner. Catherine and her husband search for, and finally find Will and try, unsuccessfully, to rescue him. But Will ends up as someone else’s slave while a pregnant Catherine has to deal with her husband, who is growing sick from a fever but on his deathbed urges Catherine to find Will and save him. After many thwarted attempts, Catherine finds Will again and finally buys him and immediately gives him his freedom. And in the end, everyone finds happiness. Hidden Place is a powerful story about racial inequality, which is particularly timely right now. But it’s also the story about true friendship and the absolute loyalty that exists between real friends. It has a powerful message of compassion, tolerance, allegiance and integrity which is particularly pertinent to the world today.
