Development Pitch
The Safo is set in Rosario, Argentina, where, in the 1930βs, young European women were actually sold into legal prostitution which was controlled by the Zwi Migdal mafia. Maria, a beautiful, strong-willed Italian immigrant, is one of these women and is sold to The Safo brothel. Ever looking to escape, she meets Judge William, who is trying to infiltrate The Safo to find enough evidence to make prostitution illegal in Rosario. If Maria can find the evidence he needs, he can shut down The Safo and free her. As Maria searches for the evidence, the two fall in love. But she starts to crumble under the crushing burdens of her new life and becomes addicted to drugs after she sees her two best friends murdered while trying to escape. When almost all her hope is gone, Maria finally finds the evidence and turns it over to Judge William. But the Zwi Migdal realizes what has happened and they try to kill Judge William and Maria. They both narrowly escape and in the end, Judge William gets prostitution ruled illegal, The Safo is shut down, the Zwi Migdal is run out of town and Maria and William are finally free to be together. In addition to being a powerful story of triumph by those who had to endure lives that were almost unbearable, The Safo is pertinent today because of all the recent disclosures about sex slaves and human trafficking.
