Development Pitch

Does evil inhabits the hearts and minds of men or is it a force that takes over the person that is vulnerable to its will. I believe both. It lives in some and takes over others. Aunt Niva and Sara are prime examples. Aunt Niva wants so bad to be in power, she will do whatever it takes to get it. Sara wants to be free of power that she is willing to go wherever to get it. While one is searching for that which another doesn't want, they both can help the other obtain their power. What both don't understand is that both have to surrender their wills to the other and that is done only on a spiritual level. Like the famous saying, there are levels to this and it is. Levels of surrendering, humbling thyself, and dying to the flesh to obtain this level of freedom from control. This movie will allow the audience to see why they encounter conflicts that are warring against in the flesh that is really a spiritual matter. We tend to understand things visually and that will make this spiritual movie impactful. It will be a sense of clarity of why and how I can be free that's harming others or himself. Aunt Niva lives in the country until she is really to expose her empire. She builds a shack for only members who have the potential or already operating in the power of excellence. As she has service and realizes she is getting older, she needs a protege to take over that has to come from her bloodline. This will lead to generational blessings or curses.

Accuracy of Book Profile

Yes, the book profile accurately reflects the book.

Draw of Story

The story begins with a young woman leaving an abusive relationship. She finds peace and her aunt's home. Strange things start happening when Sara is brought to Aunt Niva's church. It teases an evil, supernatural element based in Christianity which is an interesting spin.

Possible Drawbacks

The writing is incorrect. There are a mix of tenses and multiple grammatical and spelling errors. The dialogue is very basic. The plot has potential but it is dragged out with no real development. Many of the actions of the characters are extremely predictable and unrealistic. Sara knows her aunt is doing terrible things in the name of God yet she continues to return to her house. Her children live with this woman. When she gets out, she always comes back. That is convenient for the story but extremely unrealistic as a character action. Some characters are abusive and evil but everyone conveniently has been controlled by Aunt Niva.

Use of Special Effects

Primary Hook of Story

The hook is that Sara is runs from a toxic and abusive home into the arms of her aunt who has been using witchcraft to position her for her own biding.

Fanbase Potential

This would not have a large fanbase as is. The religion aspect is too present for a mainstream audience. Sara's actions throughout the story are questionable. She continues to learn the truth but her actions do no reflect it. It would be a frustrating watch.

Awards Potential

This does not have awards potential. The story continually rehashes the same situation without progressing on it. Sara finds herself sick and ties it back to Aunt Niva. She willing accepts Aunt Niva's schemes but condemns them at the same time. Much of her actions do not make sense especially after the 4th or 5th time they occur. The premise has the potential for great acting especially with the abuse Sara faces but the characters are very 2 dimensional at the moment.

What’s New About the Story

The story is original because of the mix of witchcraft and Christianity in a small town setting featuring black and brown characters.

Lead Characters

The lead character stands out because of her questionable decisions. While she is being manipulated on a spiritual level, there are moments when it is in her power to make a change. She keeps going back into that world where the outcome remains the same. The ending has her finally leaving the hospital again, after a long illness knowing her aunt had a hand in it and then going back to the woman's house. It doesn't make much sense.

Uniqueness of Story

This is not a gem but there are elements of the story that could create a solid film. The witchcraft tied in with the Black church is a unique look at Christianity. That theme is not explored and this dives into a world. It is the external storyline and actions of the characters that take away from it. While an abuse person is known to go back to an abuser , the situations where it happens feel unrealistic.

Film: Studio, Indie, Streaming TV Series: Limited Run / Mini-Series

Analyst Recommendation

While the story has many positive points, it has room for improvement (see possible paths below). If you can't change the story at this point, my suggestion is using your notes as a guide to highlight the best aspects of it when taking the next steps, either putting a pitch page together, a treatment, or a presentation.

Tips for Improvement

The characters need to be developed better. The storyline needs to be edited to focus on the plot. There could be more focus of Aunt Niva and what she is actually up to. Sara becomes very compliant when she is forced to marry. Her character would be more relatable if there were more defiance to her situation and not just when she is locked away or in the hospital.
