The story begins with a group of young women trapped in a cave after a major earthquake in northern New Zealand. When they finally find their way out, they find the world has changed. They go through many adventures as they search for family and make new friends along the way. They finally settle with a family in Northland and learn to be self sufficient. The second part of the story brings more people into group and they all work together to live their lives in the new world. They learn to live with more earthquakes and strange changes in the weather patterns, and supernatural things that are happening all around them.
