Short Summary

From the moment I was born I was a little sister. I looked up to my big brother and he looked out for me. He took his job of being a big brother very seriously and he was really good at it. Today, I am the big sister and I look out for him. I make sure he has everything he needs.

I am grateful that I was able to go find my brother when he was lost. I am happy that I was able to throw two parties in his honor. I am privileged that he trusts me to manage his money and for him. I will try my hardest to continue to be the best big sister that I can be to my older brother.

Development Pitch

Big Sister, Older Brother is a true story of sibling support when mental illness takes over. When the big brother is diagnosed with a mental illness and then disappears and stays missing for 4 years, the little sister never stops searching and praying for her sibling. The journey these two take during this diffucult time reminds us all of the value of family. As told from 2 perspectives. Gary, the big brother who is slowly losing his mental faculities and leaves his entire family to "find" himself and figure things out. Where does he go? What does he do? How does he survive? And Courtney the little sister who misses her brother and best friend. What is it like to have a loved one missing? How does she cope with the loss? How does she find him and bring him back? I feel this would work best as a film beginning when we were kids and ending shorly after he was found. Mental illness is at the center of the story and alot of people and families are dealing with mental illness but it is not generally talked about, especially in the African American community. This book can help give a voice to others dealing with the same thing. You are not alone.
