Narrative Elements

Authors Writing Style: EXCELLENT

Characterization: GOOD

Commerciality: EXCELLENT

Franchise Potential: EXCELLENT

Structure: GOOD

Accuracy of Book Profile

Yes the profile accurately reflects the narrative save for the pitch. The acclaims of the story do not add additional information about what the story should be consumed, rather removing the awards and helping to explain the themes such as the internal conflict Jory must overcome to ride of the nightmares and escape the dream world would be more helpful in explaining the story outside of the plot.

Draw of Story

Jory's chemistry with each character and the unique setting of Ojibwe lore along with a well paced plot create surprising moments with supportable characters.

Possible Drawbacks

There seems to be a clash of Native American folklore from a mix of cultures and Darcy's romanticizing of her being underage in comparison of Lander is a bit odd. Either Darcy could be older or not make such comments as their age difference is legal so it is weird to bring it up like that. Fact checking the Native culture such as not using Lakota folklore for a Ojibwe creation could help be more honorable to the traditions. Yes other cultures have adopted the Chippewa invention, but Iktomi is a Lakota legend.

Use of Special Effects

Primary Hook of Story

The hook is that Jory and her friends are sucked into her nightmare and things have to get worse in order for them to find the center of the web to escape. The path they are helped with is mysteriously being aided by her parents which mimics her internal transformation as they prevail along the external journey.

Fanbase Potential

This could have a large fanbase due to its genre and also its representation. There could be a dedicated fanbase of natives as well as non-natives looking to support indigenous representation in media. The rarity of the representation also means that the setting is fresh for horror fans with unpredictable elements.

Awards Potential

This is unlikely to have acting awards potential as its genre is more for entertainment and starring teens, but it could sin popular awards.

What’s New About the Story

The stories use of Ojibwe lore as the premise for the horror and the adaptation of being trapped inside the nightmare through the dream catcher is unique. Again making sure the premise sticks to purely Ojibwe exposition rather than infusing other cultures would be better.

Lead Characters

Jory is resourceful nd surprisingly open and strong for someone who just become an orphan. Choice is loveably optimistic while also practical. Darcy is naive, but uses that to er advantage in how unconditional her love is. Lander is self-sacrificing and street-smart.

Uniqueness of Story

This is a rare gem of representation matched with good pacing. The inner conflicts of the other three characters outside of Jory just need to be developed more to give their inclusion in the nightmare a deeper meaning than just being in the wrong place and wrong time.
