Short Summary

Tom Spenser and his partner happen upon a cache of heroin and an envelope of money at one of their suspects's homes. Two doors down a woman miscarries after a violent fight with her husband. Both incidents change the courses of the lives of everyone involved. Many murders and much collateral damage.

Tom solves the cases, but at an extreme cost to both him and the people he loves. He has experienced grief, pain and betrayal but has also learned humility, forgiveness, demonstrated courage time and again, and allowed himself to love. Not a 'happy' ending, by any stretch, but he can rebuild.

Development Pitch

I originally envisioned this being a Season 4 or 5 for true detective, even though when I first started the novel, True Detective hadn't even yet been storyboarded as a series for HBO before. Yes we all know Cop Shows have been done before. Yes we all know gritty cop shows have been done before. Yes we all know family cop shows have been done before. Yes we even know that there are cop shows out there, like The Departed and its origin piece, Infernal Affairs, that give you the parallels between the police and criminals and how either side of the law dances the thin line, and there is betrayal and conspiracy when the cops and criminal consortiums find themselves on opposite sides of the lines they are used to being behind. My concept with Redemption is it takes all of those and gives you something REAL. It takes the family of cops concept of shows & movies like Blue Bloods, and We Own the Night. It takes the grittiness and antihero concept of Brotherhood, The Town, and the Wire, and more recently, City on a Hill. It incorporates the traitor / betrayal angle that you find in movies like Pride and Glory, Righteous Kill, Street Kings, and the Departed. But then it also gives you hope in the storyline between Tommy and his newfound love Clarissa/Claire. This isn't just a cut and dry mystery/action/suspense/thriller; it is all of these, as well as a budding romance too. It is all of these, without being too confusing or muddled. Give it a try.

About The Author

Graduated from the Kiski School 1994 Penn State 2001 Citadel Military College Master's Program 2015 Enlisted in the Army 1994, Commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant right before 9-11. Retired at the rank of Major with 22 years' cumulative service as of 19 June 2016. Began Redemption in the middle of my 4th deployment during my down time. Wrote in bursts off and on between August 2012 and December 2018. I was fascinated with films and shows that revolved around the antihero cop / villain dynamic, such as HEAT, the TOWN, We Own The Night, The Wire, The Friends of Eddie Coyle, Pride and Glory, Righteous Kill, Homicide, the Departed, and Brotherhood, and pictured the setting of the book Redemption to be part of a 'what-if' universe. What if I had never left Pittsburgh? What if my brothers were closer in age to me? What if we had all been cops? What if my dad had been a cop as well? I hope you all enjoy.
