Short Summary
Jacoby Pines arrives in Italy with his travel-writer fiancée for what is to be a year of work for her and recovery for him. It is clear that their relationship is unstable and that Jacoby is relying upon a dated photograph that could lead to familial connections and possible redemption.
After a split from Claire and promising pursuits in search of his family turn up empty, Jacoby plans his unwilling return to America, only to be saved by fantastic events that restore his reputation in America and - more importantly - secure his ability to stay in Italy forever.
