Accuracy of Book Profile

Yes, the book profile accurately reflects the book.

Draw of Story

The story begins with a school shooting that changes the lives of the main characters. It grounds the story in the current reality.

Possible Drawbacks

The story isn't sure what it wants to be in terms of age range. It definitely reads like a teen story in the beginning, but includes unnecessary sex and profanity. There could also be more in depth world building. Mantra is a magical place but the differences should be explored more.

Use of Special Effects

THE STORY RELIES HEAVILY ON SPECIAL EFFECTS

Primary Hook of Story

The hook is that three friends are sent to a new school where they discover their magical lineage. I would watch this movie for the magical elements and seeing a diverse cast in the fantasy genre.

Fanbase Potential

This could have a large fanbase as it is very similar to many other successful films. The main characters are diverse which is an added boon. The ideology behind the magic is not unique however.

Awards Potential

This story does not have awards potential. It does not go into depth on any specific topic or character. The focus is on making it visually appealing and cool for the demographic.

Envisioned Budget

MEDIUM BUDGET

What’s New About the Story

The story has very little that is original. The main characters go to a school where they learn magic and must test them out. A foe arises that they must help to defeat. The main unique element is that the 3 main characters are black and brown skinned people.

Lead Characters

The lead characters stand out because they have bonded over a very traumatic event. They survived a terrifying school shooting where some of their classmates and teachers were killed. Those around them recognize that there is trauma and get them help accordingly. The main characters relationship between themselves also acknowledges the trauma and how each person is handling it and they treat each other well.

Uniqueness of Story

This is not a gem but an entertaining story that showcases a diverse cast. It also deals with serious topics such as gun violence, mass shootings and PTSD. To be more unique, the characters might find out about their magical history somewhere other than a school.

Analyst Recommendation

WORK IN PROGRESS

Justification

While the story has many positive points, it has room for improvement (see possible paths below). If you can't change the story at this point, my suggestion is using your notes as a guide to highlight the best aspects of it when taking the next steps, either putting a pitch page together, a treatment, or a presentation.

Tips for Improvement

The story needs to break out of the magical school troupe. There are other ways for the three friends to find out about magic. The dialogue is very on the nose and predictable contributing to the adolescent tone of the story. There needs to be more clear cut idea of the age group as well. It creeps into adult territory with the sexual relationships on display.
